Tips for Fresh, Healthy Skin in Winter

In winter, it is easy to forget about our skin. We cover it up under layers and think we’re all set until summer. But the coldest months bring their own challenges: dry air, irritated or cracked skin, sun burn on chilly days. Below are some basic tips to help you keep your skin at its best during the coldest parts of the year.

  • Sunscreen. When you are skiing, snowshoeing, or skating outside, the glare from the snow and ice can have a harmful impact on your skin, especially your face. So don’t forget to put on the SPF when you’re outside… children, too!
  • Humidify. Use a humidifier or put a pot of water on top of the woodstove. The extra moisture in the air helps your skin stay fresher.
  • Avoid over-soaping. Despite the ads telling you to get into a full lather every time you bathe, the truth is that our skin doesn’t need to be scrubbed and cleaned like that every day. Too much soap can disturb our natural pH, leading to dry skin.
  • Moisturize. Regardless of how much soap you use, it is a good idea to moisturize after you bathe. Look for products with sunflower oil, which is loaded with vitamin E, a great antioxidant, and can relieve dry or sunburned skin; coconut oil, an aromatic, effective option; or plain mineral oil. All are affordable, effective options.
